The Royal Room
Do you remember back in the early 2000’s when sponge painting was the rage? Well, I do and I absolutely loved it so much so that I have three rooms that were sponge painted. The Powder Room is now The Royal Room.
The powder room was the first room I decided to try this technique on. I know it’s outdated but I still love this technique. When you sponge paint a room it gives the appearance of wallpaper. The powder room looks so regal it’s my “Royal Room.” When I first saw the sample of the red and gold on the paint swatch I knew it would be perfect for that small room.
Back in the day, HGTV had several decorator shows that taught the sponge paint technique. I made a VSH tape to review to help me perfect the technique. I had it down pat! The technique is all in the wrist. The key is remembering not to overload the sponge.
Small spaces are difficult to work in with another person. That was one of my summer projects. It was a very tedious and time-consuming task. I enlisted my youngest son Brandon to help with the removal of the border. This was a great way to bond with my baby boy. There was lots of prep involved. Taping off walls, covering the sink and toilet.
Steps To Prepping The Walls For Painting
- Removing wallpaper border – spritz, wait then scrap. You don’t want to scrap too hard whereas to put a gash in the plaster.
- Wash the surface of the walls to remove the glue.
- Speckle and sand the walls
- Apply a red base coat, over and over again. I applied at least 3 coats of red paint.
- Special sponge and gold paint for sponging added the finishing touch.
It’s been over 10 years since I came up with this design for the powder room even though I still like the room my taste has changed. I’ve gone from ornate to contemporary styling; well imagine that. Since I have time on my hands this might come down to a fall project as the weather cools down. Look for an update on the powder room. Do you have a home project on your to-do-list?
