The Philadelphia Flower Show

I had always heard that the Philadelphia flower show was one of the best in the country.   With that being said, I had always wanted to visit Philly’s flower show but I just never got around to it.  In 2017  I decided this would be the year for my visit to the flower show, only to be disappointed.  By the time I checked the date of the flower show I had missed the show by a week.  What a bummer!

Determined not to miss the 2018  Philadelphia flower show I started checking the date for the flower show back in October 2017.  A trip to Philly would make for a lovely day trip or the potential for a nice weekend get-away to the city of Brotherly Love.  I went with the weekend getaway.  With Philadelphia being so close to Delaware, New Jersey, and New York there’s a lot to see and do in the area.

Spring Is Near

This years  (Philadelphia Horticultural Society)  PHS Philadelphia flower show theme was the “Wonders of Water”.  As you walk into the garden venue you are greeted by a 65×50 foot exhibition designed to showcase the Delaware River Watershed along with the sounds of chirping birds around the massive wooden waterfall. The key focus of the show was to show the connection between plants and water quality.

You could live in a small space, a balcony apartment, townhouse, a row house or a place with no yard and still find ideas to bring plantings into your living space with the assistance of container gardening.

If you have a love for the wilderness you could find it there at the flower show.  There were all kinds of wonderful succulents for those who refuse to believe that they have a green thumb.  Succulents can pretty much take care of themselves.  They require very little water and plenty of ignoring for them to thrive.

The Philadelphia Flower Show introduced the desert, a park-like theme, along with a cornfield growing in an urban setting.  Landscape designers and horticulturalists were able to bring different experiences to the exhibits.

The Philadelphia Flower Show had something for everyone.

The flower show had something for everyone, it was truly a family event.

My visit to the Philadelphia flower show in 2018 exceeded my expectations.

Walking through the exhibition there is a beautiful formal garden with an Asian theme introducing tranquility and calm into the landscape.  Lots of wonderful ideas for the home gardener to apply in their outdoor space.

I wore comfortable boots because I knew I would have to do a lot of walking. There were lots of people enjoying the day.  This was the last of a two-week event, so I’m pretty sure many were there because they didn’t want to miss the last week of the flower show.

Beautiful ponds with statues and bubbling fountains were found throughout the exhibit.  The theme of this year’s PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, Wonders of Water, allowed people to sample what it might be like to have a water element in their own yard.

You didn’t have to go very far to find the mountains, for the mountain climbers.  What an unexpected view.

Well, when you go to a flower and garden show you do expect to find flowers, but you never expect to find such a jazzy car.  It was a nice surprise!  Last year around this same time I visited New York City.  My, how time flies!  You might want to take a minute and read my post on A New York State of Mind.

“The City of Brotherly Love” was very welcoming. My love of spring made my visit to the Philadelphia flower show 2018 wonderful experience.  Even though we are still experiencing winter the flower show allowed me to imagine the upcoming beauty of spring.  I’m counting the days, hours, minutes, and seconds until we are truly into the thick of spring. The flower show has motived me to prepare my garden for what spring has to bring.
