The town of St. Michaels, Maryland takes you back to days gone by to a simpler time.  St. Michaels is a gem of a town located on the Eastern Shore in Talbot County. St. Michaels has its own unique charm and grace. Less modernized than most other cities in the state.  It’s a place you don’t mind spending the weekend enjoying the sites and the quaint shops. In addition you will learn a lot about Maryland’s history.

The main street is lined with neat colorful old homes that now double as shops, restaurants, and art galleries.

St. Michaels With The Hometown Charm

Established in 2012, The The Lyon Distillery first open its doors. They produce exceptional vodka and rum on the premises. They use the best raw ingredients which allows them to produce high-quality spirits. The Lyon Distilling Co. hosts free tours of the facility explaining the details of the distilling process. Also the distillery provides free samples for tourists. In addition you can also buy shirts and other branded items.

Things to See

Right next door to The Lyon Distilling Co is a building which is referred to as the Winery.  Here you are able to sample the numerous wines they produce.  They offer tasting and you are able to purchase the wines. For example white, red and aged wines.

Make sure you wear your walking shoes. Park your car and just enjoy the scenery.  Signs will lead you to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.  Here you can get a glimpse into the lives of the men and women who made a living crabbing and fishing along the Chesapeake Bay. I suggest visiting the museum near the closing it’s much less expensive.

I’m telling you, St. Michaels is such an interesting place you could spend the entire day marveling at the many fascinating sights and sounds.  There is so much to see and do in St. Michaels; Clearly, it’s the perfect place to bring out of town guests to visit.

The Patriot Cruise

The Patriot Cruise is awesome. It’s a 65 foot 149 passenger vessel.  The Patriot docks very near the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. The cruise takes about 65 to 75 minutes, which can be fun for the whole family. Kids and adults get to meet the captain and get to peek into the bridge of the passenger vessel. The captain provides an opportunity for kids to guide the ship. Another reason to take the cruise is for the great views. You learn a lot about the history of the area as well as taking in the breathe taking views.

Young and old alike enjoy the pleasures the beautiful waterway has to offer.

Beautiful historic homes can be found all along the way with boat slips to give easy access to the water.

One such house was used for the setting of the movie  “The Wedding Crasher.”   The movie was produced back in 2005  starring  Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Bradley Cooper, Jayne Seymour, Rachel McAdams and others.  The movie was a big theater draw.   As you can see from the view this place would make a beautiful backdrop for a movie.

Duck Blind

This device is called a duck or hunting blind, it can be seen as you tour the area on the Miles River. Duck hunters position themselves in the device as they hunt for their prey.

Boats cozy up to the nearby restaurants to enjoy a meal or refreshments as they frequent the waterway.

Historic Structure

Historic St. Michaels

St. Michaels is steeped in history.  It’s a part of an era where simple Quaker meeting houses can be found which date back to 1682.   Tucked away near St. Michaels is the plantation where abolitionist Frederick Douglas made his escape to freedom.

Not far from there is the birthplace of Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in Dorchester County, Maryland. She was also an abolitionist who escaped and went on to help other family and friends gain their freedom. Harriet Tubman is credited with helping over 300 slaves escape. In addition she is one of the most famous African Americans from Maryland. Consequently she is recognized world wide for her courageous work.
