Dark and Stormy Margarita

What a wonderful time to take advantage of all the beautiful fresh blackberries and blueberries that are now in season.  The perfect cocktail to celebrate these fruits would be the Dark and Stormy Margarita.  The cocktail is just as visually impressive as it is cool and delicious.  This drink is filled with other fruits such as pineapples, peaches, and plums adding to the full onset of summer.  However, this cocktail could be duplicated during any season by using fresh, frozen, or a combination of both when making this drink.

If you are using fresh fruit, you can only eat so many muffins or make so many fruit salads before you need another preparation to keep the berries from going bad.  Hence, came this lovely idea for the Dark and Stormy Margarita.  When making one or several cocktails it can be so quick and easy.

The black and blueberries are the stars of the show.  Now, the juice of the berries is able to offer a tinge of mystique to the cocktail while still allowing the other fruits to shine through.  While also making the beverage look so delicious and inviting.

A simple syrup adds sweetness to the drink.  Lime juice is added for a note of tartness. This lends itself to the classic margarita by including triple sec and by all means a few ounces of tequila to add the finishing touch to this cocktail.

Rim Your Glass

Most margaritas that I have drank used salt, that’s okay.  However, let me just say you don’t always have to use salt.  Be bold and raid the cake decorating supplies.  Use the decorative sugars.  That’s what I love to do.  It provides for a more interesting cocktail.

Simply rim the glasses with the simple syrup, allow the syrup to become tacky before dipping the rim of the glass in the decorative sugar, then set aside (use a lime wedge to rim the glass if you aren’t using a simple syrup).  Garnish three cocktail skewers with the blackberries, blueberries, and other fruits; set aside.

Muddle Your Berries

When making several cocktails at once I muddle (mash) my berries along with some of the other desired fruits in a small bowl.  Next, transfer the fruit to each individual glass.  You can use your standard margarita glasses or any glasses of your choice.

How To Make The Dark and Stormy Margarita

  1. Place 3/4 cup of ice cubes in a cocktail shaker.
  2. Add the tequila, lime juice, triple sec. and simple syrup to the cocktail shaker.
  3. Shake to blend all the ingredients together.
  4. Place 1/4 cup ice into each glass.
  5. Top with the margarita mixture.
  6. Garnish with fruit skewers and add a straw if you’d like.  The Island Breeze Pineapple Orange Margarita is another awesome cocktail you most certainly should try.

We have Pancho Morales to thank for the creation of the margarita.  He invented the Margarita back in the summer of 1942.  Pancho was said to be the best bartender in Juarez, and in all of Mexico.  All I can say is thanks to Pancho the margarita is one of my favorite drinks.
