Chowder can be such a comforting food. I make a chowder called Bountiful Crab Chowder which falls into this category. The chowder is rich, delicious full of flavor, and very easy to prepare. It is filled with plenty of backfin crab (the least expensive crabmeat), that adds so much flavor to the chowder. One advantage of making this chowder is you don’t have to use the most expensive crabmeat. Lump crab meat is the most expensive type and it can be pricey when its part of a recipe.
If you make too much Bountiful Crab Chowder it can be frozen and enjoyed later in the week or month. It can be shared with a neighbor, family or friend as a wonderful gesture of thoughtfulness.
I shared this Bountiful Crab Chowder with a dear friend of mine named Pam. Pam kept commenting on how great the chowder tasted while she quickly consumed it. As I looked over at Pam I could have sworn that I saw tears welling in her eyes. I wasn’t sure if she was tearing up because the chowder was that good or because she didn’t have to cook that evening. Lol!
Honestly, Pam really hates to cook. She is always willing to try whatever food I have prepared. I love that she will call sometimes before she gets off from work and ask, “What are we having for dinner tonight?” This usually happens when I have neglected to call her over for a meal for an extended period of time. I consider her my official taste tester.
This chowder is thick with plenty of potatoes, corn, celery, string beans, tomatoes, crabmeat and plenty of wonderful seasonings.

- 3 tablespoons oil
- 1 medium green pepper, chopped
- 3 stalks celery, chopped
- 1 large red onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1 box frozen mixed vegetables (corn, green beans, and peas)
- 2 medium potatoes peeled and cut into medium cubed
- 1 can (16 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- ½ cup red wine
- ½ cup water
- 11/2 tablespoons OLD BAY Seasoning
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 10 ounces claw crabmeat (backfin crabmeat, shrimp or fish)
- In a large pot, heat vegetable oil. Add peppers, onion, celery, and garlic; Saute until tender, about 5 minutes.
- Mix in crushed tomatoes, wine, and water. Bring to a boil.
- Add the OLD BAY Seasoning, potatoes, mixed vegetables, cayenne, salt, and pepper.
- Cover and simmer for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in crab (backfin crabmeat, shrimp or fish). Simmer 25 more minutes.
