Black-Eyed Susan Cocktail

It’s Preakness week here in  Maryland.  The second leg of the triple crown.  Maryland is the link between the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. The weather has not been cooperating for the race.  The 143rd running of the Preakness Stakes 2018 will go down in history as one of the sloppiest tracks ever.  It has been raining all week and this third Saturday in May has been no different.

The black eyed cocktail is refreshingly light with a tropical taste.

There is nothing like having a Black-Eyed Susan cocktail the official drink of the Preakness.  Unlike the Mint Julep cocktail the official drink of the Kentucky Derby, there are many Black-Eyed Susan cocktails recipes floating around the Internet.   You literally can take your pick of eight different recipes for the same Black-Eyed Susan cocktail.

It really depends on your taste in beverages, the cocktail has various blends of alcohol.  I found a recipe for a Black-Eyed Susan Cocktail in which I had all of the ingredients in stock.  The cocktail consists of vodka, rum, triple sec, orange juice, pineapple juice, crushed ice, and garnish with citrus and cherries.

The Black-Eyed Susan cocktail is named after Maryland’s state flower.  It became the official flower of the Preakness in 1940.  The Black-Eyed Susan flowers are used to make the blanket that drapes the winning horse at the Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland.  I shall further clarify this statement.

The Preakness takes place on the third Saturday in May each year.   The Black-Eyed Susan doesn’t bloom until the latter part of June.  Truth be told Viking daisies are enhanced with brown centers and used to make the blanket that drapes the winning horse.  The flowers being used in this post are not Black-Eyed Susan’s but sunflowers and daisies.  What can I say except it’s too early for the state flower to bloom. However, it’s not too early to enjoy a Black-Eyed Susan cocktail the official drink of the Preakness.
