Looking for the perfect fall treat?, Well, you’ve come to the right place this Apple Crumble Crisp fits the bill.  Really, this comforting dish would be delicious any time of the year.

A simple dessert that is rich in flavor.  The Apple Crumble Crisp can be simple and easy to make.  It can be made with the ingredients found in your pantry.  Along with the apples take out those Old Fashion Oatmeal (not the quick cook), sugar, corn starch, butter, vanilla, cinnamon, lemon juice to keep the apples from browning and provide a little zing to the dessert.  In no time a warm comforting treat could be on your family’s table.

What’s the Difference Between A Crisp, Crumble, and Streusel?

I will start by saying a crisp, crumble, and streusel are toppings for a fruity bake dish.  Now to answer the question what is the difference between a crisp, crumble, and streusel is:

  • A crisp is thought to be a fruit dessert baked with a crunchy topping made with oats, brown sugar, granulated sugar (one or the other in some cases both sugars), cinnamon, butter, flour, flavoring.
  • Next, a crumble is a topping that may include chopped nuts; pecans, walnut, or other nuts.  According to Emma Wartman of Bon Appétit under the category, “Basically” she states “there is very little difference between a crisp and a crumble”.
  • Finally, streusel is a combination of flour (or corn starch), sugar, and butter used to make a topping baked on top of breads, cakes, pies, and muffins.

How To Make An Apple Crumble Crisp?

  1. Start, by preheating the oven to 350 degrees.  Lightly grease 2 5-inch skillet, and 1-8X8 baking dish, or just 1-11X9 baking dish with vegetable spray.  Set the skillets and baking dish aside.  Then, use crisp firm apples such as Johnathan, Honey Crisp for their sweetness along with Granny Smith to add a touch of tartness. For instance, use one or a combination of sweet and tartness for variety and flavor.  These apples make good choices when baking.
  2. Peel, core, and cut the apples into medium size pieces.  Add the apples to a large bowl along with the cinnamon, sugar, salt, corn starch, vanilla, and lemon juice.  The lemon juice will help reduce the browning of the apples and lend a bit of tartiness to the crisp.  Refrigerate the apple filling while preparing the crumble crisp.
  3. Next, in a separate medium-size bowl combine the oats, brown sugar, granulated sugar, pecan, cinnamon, butter, flour, and vanilla extract.  Use a pastry blender or your clean hands to thoroughly blend the ingredients together.
  4. Add the apple filling to the skillets and or baking dish.  Finally, top with the crumble crisp topping.

Why Use A Cookie Sheet?

Next, place the skillets or baking dish on a cookie sheet to prevent fruit juice spills in the oven.  It will cut down on oven clean-up.  Allow the Apple Crumble Crisp to bake until toppings are golden brown about 30 minutes.  Let rest 10 minutes before serving.

Apple Crisp Crumble celebrates everything comforting.  The smell of cinnamon permeating throughout the house makes you think of warmth and relaxation.  Once the crisp has cooked all you need is several scoops in a bowl topped with vanilla ice cream and that’s all she wrote.  Find a seat and sit back,  and you’ll find yourself being transported back to happier times.  Another wonderful apple dessert you are sure to enjoy is my Apple Pomegranate Dutch Baby, give it a try and let me know what you think in the comments below.
