Funnel Cake Worthy of The State Fair

Growing up I loved to go to the state fair just to eat the funnel cake.  It seems like you always find the best funnel cake at the state fair.  I was sitting around reminiscing about my childhood and decided to make a funnel cake for old times sake.

When making a funnel cake worthy of the state fair the key is to keep it simple.  All the ingredients needed for funnel cakes are probably in your kitchen.  You’ll need flour, milk, eggs, salt, sugar, vanilla, cooking oil, baking powder and confectioner sugar.  Those are the basics for funnel cake worthy of the state fair.

If you can make pancakes then you can surely make funnel cakes.  All you are doing is using a bit more oil.  I recommend using a cooking thermometer to keep a constant temperature of 375 degrees during the frying process.

You may need to purchase your favorite toppings if you don’t have them on hand.  Some funnel cakes are topped with a cherry, apple, strawberry or lemon filling. Even chocolate syrup, whip cream or confectionary sugar make for delicious toppings.  Be creative with your toppings, however, my favorite is confectionary (powder sugar) sugar.  Heavy on the sugar because this isn’t dieting food.  This is fun food.  What’s your favorite topping?  Another sweet treat you might like to try is the Chocolate Nutty Toffee it’s sure to hit your sweet spot.

If you decide to experiment with numerous toppings I tried cherry topping with whip cream on top.  Now that was delicious!

Childhood memories can be special.  A certain time of the year, places, sounds, smells, can bring back such wonderful memories such as funnel cakes found at the state fair.  What’s your favorite state food?
