Icy Frozen Strawberry Granita

It’s summertime, that time of the year when we indulge in lots of cool treats to beat the summer heat.  I have the perfect cool treat for you, an icy frozen strawberry granita.  A granita is a lovely treat that makes summer so worthwhile.

You may be asking yourself what the heck is a granita?  Well, I actually stumbled on the answer myself.  My plan was to make a strawberry sorbet for this post, but as I was during my research I found I had actually made a granita.  I’m sure you are saying, “Well hello what is a granita”?

A granita and sorbet are both typically made with fruit and sugar.  They might sometime contain an acid such as lemon or lime as well as water, and a flavoring.  Now how they differ is a granita is poured into a dish or pan and frozen then scraped during the freezing process numerous times, creating icy crystals in texture.  However, a sorbet is usually churned in an ice cream maker then frozen.

The beauty of this dessert is you could make a lovely light and fresh granita from your favorite fruits.  Get your creative juice flowing by combining fruits.  You could use frozen, can, or seasonal fruits as I have done and come up with this delicious icy frozen strawberry granita.

This is such a refreshing dessert and so easy to make, keep it on hand for a healthy snack or have it on hand when friends stop by. They are sure to love this light dessert.  If you are interested in other healthy treats you must try, “Popsicles, Nana’s Secret Weapon”.
