The Evolution of A Kitchen

The kitchen is the soul of a home.  It’s my domain most of the time. The evolution of a kitchen is needed to become my happy place.  Much work is needed here.   So it was important for my kitchen to be stylish, equipped with the right kitchen tools and gadgets and on top of that well stocked. I just need some soulful music and a nice glass of wine and I can cook for days.

When I first saw the kitchen it didn’t look like much but I could see the potential. It just needed a little tender loving care and I could certainly give it that.

The property that I purchased was a foreclosure which basically meant I was buying it “as is”.  As you can see in the photo the kitchen faucet handles and the built-in microwave had been removed before I moved in. These were all easy cosmetic repairs that would only present a minor expense.

One of the most positive aspects of buying my foreclosed home was that it was practically new. When I moved into my home was only 6 years old.  Since I purchased a practically new home I did not have to worry about replacing high ticket items like my furnace, air conditioning unit or water heater which turned out to be a blessing.

This was one of the first make-overs for the kitchen.  Sometimes just adding a coat of paint can make all the difference in the world.  It’s well worth the evolution of a kitchen.   Taping off the wall and ceiling before painting can be time-consuming but oh so worth it.   It helped me to prevent painting surfaces I didn’t want to be painted.  At the time I hadn’t quite mastered the art of painting.

They tell you to “fake it until you can make it.” I had to come up with some way of filling that ugly hole where the built-in microwave once stood. To give the microwave a finished look it was framed with crown molding to make it appear more attractive.  The overhead lighting was replaced with new light fixtures.

I could never understand why such a small opening was placed between the kitchen and the living room.  I thought it was a waste of another overhead cabinet.

In 2011 I decided to replace the carpeting throughout the living room, hallway, and powder room with hardwood floors before I retired.

I left Lumber Liquidator with a contract and a date for my hardwood insulation in hand. I was traveling with my good girl friend and feeling happy about my accomplishment.  While I was driving I saw a kitchen and bathroom remodeling business that had been advertising in a local circular. I told my girlfriend that I had always wanted to check it out.  She said, “well lets check it out”, and the rest, as you can see is history.

Before
After

I had no intention of remodeling my kitchen I was actually happy with the one I had. Well, the rest is history I purchased new floors and a new kitchen within days of each other and I couldn’t be happier with the results.

I love my kitchen!
