It’s simple to make and it’s sure to be a hit at your next barbecue.  Let’s not front you may want to make a pan of this delicious dessert for tonight’s dinner.

I simply couldn’t wait to share this recipe with you.  This dump cake is so easy to make and it’s very forgiving.  Together As A Family blog has a recipe for A Turtle Dump Cake, which inspired me to create my Ooey Gooey Double Decker Turtle Dump Cake.  I didn’t want to go into details about their recipe since I used what I had in my baking pantry to make this dessert.

However, I did start with a 13×9-inch greased pan as suggested.  Spraying the dish with a non-stick cooking spray prevents the cake from sticking during the baking process.

Ingredients Needed for the Ooey Gooey Double Decker Turtle Dump Cake

I know you see one package of cake mix, however, I really did use two packages for the dessert.  The 13×9-inch pan is pretty big that’s used to bake the cake in, so I went with a second package of cake mix to produce a thicker cake.  Believe me it works perfectly!  You may also see 1-1/2 cup milk, needless to say I used 2-1/4 cups milk.

  • 2 boxes  (15.25 oz) Devil’s Food Cake Mix
  • 1 small box (3.4 oz) Jell-O Chocolate Instant Pudding Mix
  • 1 bag (12 0z) milk chocolate candy wafers, chopped or semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2 1/4 cups milk
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped
  • 1 cup Caramel Flavored Syrup

What Gives This Dessert Its Ooey Gooey Factor?

The three ingredients that were added to give crunch, bite, and a soft sticky flavor for that ooey-gooey factor in this dump cake were:

  • Chocolate and Plain Toffee Bits.  I used a combination of both toffee bits in this dessert because that’s what I had left-over from other baking projects.   Half of the bits were used in the batter and the other half was used in the middle layer of the cake while the last was used to garnish the top of the Double Decker Turtle Dump Cake.
  • Mini Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels were used as a garnish on top of the dump cake.  My motto is you can never have too much chocolate in a dessert.  You could very easily use some of the semi-sweet chocolate chips as a garnish.
  • Caramels-I Had 15 caramel candies which I cut each caramel into 4 pieces and they were spread evenly on the bottom layer of the dump cake along with the toffee bits.

Steps To Make The Double Decker Turtle Dump Cake

  1.  Preheat the oven to 350 degrees for 10 minutes.  In a large bowl add the milk and instant chocolate pudding.  With a whisk or large spoon mix the pudding for 2 to 3 minutes until smooth.  Add to the bowl a 1/2 cup toffee bits, caramel sauce, half the pecan, 1 cup milk chocolate candy wafer, or (semi-sweet chocolate chips).  Stir until well blended it should be the consistency of a thick batter.
  2. LAYER 1:  Spray a 13×9-inch baking dish with a non-stick cooking spray.  Pour half the batter into the baking dish using a spatula and spread the batter evenly over the bottom of the dish.  Sprinkle the toffee, chopped milk chocolate candy wafers, or (semi-chocolate chips) evenly over the batter.
  3. LAYER  2:  Dollop the last half of the batter throughout the baking dish.
  4. Use a spatula to spread the batter evenly over the bottom layer of the Ooey Gooey Double Decker Turtle Dump Cake. These two added layers make this cake a double-decker.  It couldn’t be any easier.

Sprinkle the remaining pecans, toffee bits, chopped milk chocolate candy wafers or (semi-chocolate chips), and mini semi-sweet chocolate morsels(optional).  Bake for 40 to 42 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out almost clean.  The edges should slightly pull away from the sides of the pan.

Serve your Ooey Gooey Double Decker Turtle Dump Cake hot with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream with a cherry on top and see the smiles come over the faces of your family and friends.

You have choices,  add ice cream topped with caramel sauce or just take a square right out the pan. Such a rich decadent chocolate dish that’s sure to fill any dessert lover’s fantasy.  Remember, counting calories is not an option with this dessert taste, and flavor is without a doubt the winner.
